THC, CBD, THCV, CBN... WTF, amirite? Over 100 different cannabinoids have been identified in the cannabis plant. The most popular, of course, is delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol (THC). THC is the belle of the ball since it’s responsible for that classic cannabis “high.”
You’ve also likely heard of cannabidiol (or CBD) since more research is being done to learn about the full range of benefits it offers. But what about the other cannabinoids? Do you even need to know about them? We think so, and we’ll dive into some of the most talked-about ones below.
Cannabinoids are chemical compounds found within the cannabis plant. The acid forms of these compounds, like THCA and CBDA, are naturally synthesized within the plant. Through a process called decarboxylation, these cannabinoids are converted to the forms that we are most familiar with, like THC and CBD. Decarboxylation is achieved either slowly over time through the drying and curing process, or quickly via heat.
When you think of THC, you’re probably thinking about delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol, the most common form of THC. But have you heard of delta-8-tetrahydrocannabinol? We call delta-8 “THC-Light” due to its mellow high (compared to delta-9). I tried out the new Delta-8 Lemon Cake LOUD+CLEAR cart while I was hanging out with friends and the first reaction was how tasty it is (thanks to terpene-rich live resin); and second, after passing it back and forth for a while, was how clear-headed we all felt while still feeling SUUUUUUPER comfortable. Sometimes I can get a little anxious with THC, but delta-8 felt like a perfect daytime vaping option for me without getting trapped in my head wondering if I’m acting weird. Anyone else? No? Yeah, me either.
CBD has been getting a lot of attention due to the growing body of clinical research being performed. There are a couple of really cool things you should know about CBD. First of all, it’s non-intoxicating on its own, and actually mellows out the heady high of THC. Second, CBD works more efficiently with THC due to the entourage effect, the process by which different cannabinoids and terpenes work together with your body’s endocannabinoid system, or ECS, for enhanced synergistic benefits.
What benefits you might ask? Our friends at ProjectCBD.org have become the authority on compiling and presenting this emerging research.
Tetrahydrocannabivarin (wow, that’s a big word, let’s just call it THCV from here on out) is making a lot of headlines because some pre-clinical studies indicate there may be potential uses of this cannabinoid for its effect on blood sugar and appetite. Though it is still way too early to make any potential claims, we’ll definitely be watching this space in the years ahead.
As with all cannabis research, still more is needed to determine the true effects THCV has on our bodies. While there aren’t a lot of strains high in THCV, it may be found in some flower strains like Tangie and GSC.
Here’s a fun fact you can tell your friends: Non-intoxicating cannabinol (AKA CBN, AKA the sleepy cannabinoid) is created when THC ages. So that old nug in the back of your stash just might be your key to a good night’s rest.
There’s still so much to learn about all the different cannabinoids. But one reason you should be interested is because of your ECS.
Ok, now you may be thinking, “WTF is my Endocannabinoid System?” Don’t worry, we’ll give you the cliff notes. Our ECS plays a crucial role in maintaining homeostasis in our bodies. We have endocannabinoid receptors throughout our body, and we make endocannabinoids (endo=within) to drive our endocannabinoid system. Many health issues have been linked to a deficit in endocannabinoids, and cannabinoids from cannabis can help support our body’s endocannabinoid system.
With increased approval for federal research and global acceptance, we are only now beginning to understand the full benefits of the cannabis plant. Each of these cannabinoids supports your body in different ways, resulting in a healthier, happier you. At AbsoluteXtracts, we’re constantly exploring new ways to utilize the cannabis plant and harness its full potential to help you enhance your adventure, every day.
